What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?
A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint one or more people (your “attorneys”) to make decisions for you if you lose mental capacity or need help managing your affairs.
There are two types:
1. Property & Financial Affairs LPA
Covers decisions about:

- Selling or maintaining property

- Day‑to‑day financial management
This can be used with your permission while you still have capacity, or if you lose capacity in the future.
2. Health & Welfare LPA
Covers decisions about:
- Medical treatment

- Life‑sustaining treatment
- Day‑to‑day wellbeing
This can only be used if you lose mental capacity.

Appointments at Home, in Care Homes and Hospices

Capacity and When an LPA Can Be Made
To make an LPA, you must have the mental capacity to understand what the document means. Our Solicitors can:
